Surrounded by coast, marshland and geest, the Dithmarsch district town lies in the north of the Hamburg metropolitan region.

Heide is the capital of the legendary peasant republic of Dithmarschen. In the Middle Ages, the people of Dithmarschen fought for their independence and founded the capital of the West Coast region in Heide - the huge Heider Marktplatz is still a reminder of this today.

Heide - market town in the North Sea wind

With almost 47,000 square meters of undeveloped area, it is the largest square in Germany and a place with history. During the time of the independent peasant republic of Dithmarschen, the square was the meeting place of the regional assembly from 1447. As early as the 16th century, merchants gathered there every Saturday for a weekly market. The farmers' republic has long since ceased to exist, but the traditional weekly market has remained to this day. In addition, a large Christmas market is held on the square every year, as well as the "Heider Marktfrieden" (Heider Market Peace) every two years.
